MLB Trade Rumors: Detroit Tigers Calling About Antonio Bastardo, Johnathan Papelbon

The Detroit Tigers are looking to upgrade every aspect of their bullpen and that includes adding another left-hander.

Jon Morosi tweeted the latest Detroit Tigers Trade Rumor last night.

Antonio Bastardo has had some success holding down left-handed hitters.  Lefties are hitting just .143 against Bastardo but he has had his issue with walks posting a WHIP of 1.102.

According to Detroit Tigers beat writer Chris Iott of MLive.com, the Tigers would option Ian Krol to Toledo to make room for Antonio Bastardo on the roster.

If the Tigers obtained Bastardo, they would likely option Krol to Triple-A Toledo to make room for him. They could also send a right-hander down and keep their two current left-handers along with Bastardo, who has solid numbers against right-handers. But it seems more likely that he would take Krol’s spot.

Morosi’s tweets also indicated that the Tigers are also keeping tabs on Johnathan Papelbon.  Interesting considering Papelbon has stated that he is not interested in going to any team who is not interested in using him as the closer. That may indicate a shift in the level of confidence the Detroit Tigers have in Joe Nathan.
