The Detroit Tigers will try to get the road monkey off their back right away this season with a win over the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium.  Getting a win in Carolina will be a tricky proposition considering the injuries that have plagued the this week.

Most of the injuries have occurred in the secondary.  With nickleback Bill  Bentley out for the season, the Lions have promoted Nate Ness from the practice squad to give the Lions more depth in coverage packages.  However the team is still thin at safety with Don Carey and James Ihedigbo likely unable to play in Carolina.

Keys To Game:

Contain Cam – Unlike last week against the Giants, the Lions will be facing a dual threat at quarterback in Cam Newton.  The Carolina quarterback can hurt you with his arm and his legs.  Even though he is banged up, Newton’s fearless style of play will pressure the Lions defense up front and in the backfield.

Pressure – It sounds like a bit of a broken record but for the Lions to be successful on defense they must pressure the quarterback.  This is especially important considering the Lions injury weakened secondary.  The Detroit Lions front four remains the strength of the Lions defense and if they can’t get to the quarterback it could be a long game.

Protect Stafford – The Carolina Panthers have a potent pass rush.  That means Stafford will be getting pressure all day from the Carolina front seven.  With a key injury to LaAdrian Waddle at tackle the Detroit Lions might have to put together some creative blocking schemes in order to keep Matt Stafford upright.
