The Detroit Red Wings have made even more news as the ticker to the NHL trade deadline ticks down.

Many thought that the Red Wings might go after Toronto Maple Leaf Dion Phaneuf, but there was word that the Maple Leafs were asking for a little too much from the Red Wings and as they tend to do stood firm. Then the news broke that the Red Wings had traded for New Jersey Devils Marek Zidlicky who was also on the radar for the Red Wings throughout the week.

Who is Marek Zidlicky, well he is a 38-year-old defenseman who has a right-handed shot. Which is important because that was what the team was looking for in a player. Unlike Erik Cole who the Red Wings obtained last night, he isn’t as tall he is only 5 foot 11.

He has 23 points in 63 games this season, 4 of which are goals and 19 are assists. He has spent the last 4 seasons with the Devils, before that he played with the Minnesota Wild along with some time in Nashville .

His current cap hit is $3 million, which is better in comparison to Phaneuf who had a cap hit of $7 million and a crazy length in his contract that Toronto thought was a good idea. So in money terms Zidlicky was a better pick up compared to Phaneuf.

What did the Red Wings give up for Zidlicky? A 3rd-round draft pick in the 2016 draft. If the Red Wings make it to the Stanley Cup finals then the draft pick becomes a 2nd-round pick for the Devils, there are also a few other conditions that can make the pick turn into different rounds or adds another one.

It will be interesting to see what the veteran Czech can bring to the Red Wings as they make their way to the playoffs. Along with the pick up of Cole this has been a busy trade deadline at least for the Red Wings and hopefully it will work out well as the postseason gets closer.
