NBA Free Agency: Draymond Green-Warriors Talks Break Down

It has been an inauspicious start to the NBA free agency period for the Detroit Pistons but it would look a whole lot better if Draymond Green suddenly entered the picture.

The Pistons have missed out on their top target small forwards in Danny Green and DeMarre Carroll, but Draymond Green will be free to look around according to a report from Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports.

"The Golden State Warriors and restricted free-agent forward Draymond Green have broken off contract talks, a source told Yahoo Sports on Wednesday. The Warriors met with Green and agent B.J. Armstrong in Los Angeles after 12:01 a.m. ET on Tuesday when NBA free agents could first begin negotiating with teams, a source told Yahoo Sports. The Warriors were given the first opportunity to reach a contract agreement before Green considered talking with other teams. But with the breakdown in talks, Green is now open to meeting with other franchises immediately, the source said."

Optimism for a Draymond Green homecoming should be kept on ice for the time being. While the Warriors are obviously reluctant to jump right in to a max deal, they don’t have any reason to at this point. If the market sets Green’s value there, which it surely will, the Warriors will still have the ability to the offer sheet that Green signs with someone else.

The Pistons and Stan Van Gundy have stated that they would pursue unrestricted free agents as a priority because cap space gets tied up in the limbo period between signing a restricted free agent to an offer sheet and the deadline for his original team to match.

But with unrestricted free agents Danny Green and DeMarre Carroll off the board, it would seem the time to shift attention to restricted free agents in general, and Draymond Green in particular, has come.
