The Detroit Pistons will honor Ben Wallace by raising his number three to the rafters before the team takes on the Golden State Warriors tonight.

It is always a big night when the Detroit Pistons welcome the NBA’s hottest team featuring the league’s hottest star. But Saturday night’s game against the Golden State Warriors will draw long-time Pistons fans for another reason.

Prior to the game, Ben Wallace will be honored with a ceremony in which his iconic number three will be retired and raised to the rafters. On hand will be former teammates like Richard Hamilton and Wallace’s coach during the Pistons’ 2004 championship season, Larry Brown.

Despite hanging in the rafters, the number three will be on the floor as soon as rookie Stanley Johnson checks in. And yes, there will be a game – a pretty big one.

The Pistons lost to the Western Conference’s second best team in their last home game and welcome the West’s top team tonight. With a disappointing road loss to the Memphis Grizzlies sandwiched in between, a win would be a nice emotional boost on a celebratory night. That’s not to mention that the Pistons’ status as a playoff team in the East remains precarious at just one game ahead of the ninth place Orlando Magic.

The teams on the schedule get a little easier after tonight but the Pistons will embark on a four game road trip to face them. A loss tonight followed by a lackluster road trip could see the Pistons slip out of playoff position as the season enters the second half.

But first things first: honoring a cornerstone of a Pistons championship team then taking on the defending champs.
