Detroit Tigers: 2016 Spring Training Hats Revealed by New Era

The Detroit Tigers’ 2016 spring training hats will feature a white-on-navy look at home and blue-on-orange version on the road.

Major League Baseball’s official hat manufacturer, New Era, unveiled their new spring training cap designs for all 30 teams on Thursday afternoon.

The Detroit Tigers are one of a handful of teams to get two designs. The home design is a fairly standard navy cap with the Olde English D outlined in white stitching. The road design is a (bright) orange hat with navy stitching outlining the Olde English D.

The two Tigers hats are shown below (along with other AL Central teams) in a screen capped tweet from MLB.

All in all I would consider the 2016 caps to be a downgrade from the 2015 home and road versions which were cleaner designs and adhered more closely to the Tigers’ traditional aesthetic.

The Tigers’ caps will pair with Spring Training jersey tops as well. Below is the home version followed by the road version.

In the past the Tigers have worn their standard regular season uniforms (with the spring caps) in Grapefruit League games, with the spring jerseys being worn in workouts and batting practice. It’s not yet clear if they’ll follow that same practice as well in 2016.

I find the jerseys to be mostly ‘meh’. They look like the type of thing found on clearance at the local sporting goods store. I think it’s just hard to take classic imagery like the Tigers have and make it into anything fresh. It’s almost best just to leave it alone (not that I’m against trying).

Teams who will don really cool hats this spring include the Chicago White Sox, the Tampa Bay Rays, and Cincinnati Reds. The Milwaukee Brewers and Toronto Blue Jays also get positive marks from the present author.
