The Detroit Red Wings welcome the Boston Bruins, arguably the most surprising team in the NHL this year, to Joe Louis Arena this afternoon.

The Detroit Red Wings deserved a better fate on Friday night against the Colorado Avalanche. The Avalanche beat the Red Wings 3-2 in a shootout but the Red Wings controlled play most of the night.

Out-shooting the Avalanche 45-21 , the Red Wings had several opportunities to end that game but had to deal with Semyon Varlamov, who stopped 43 Red Wings shots.

Thankfully, the Red Wings actually gained ground on the Florida Panthers because the Panthers lost not only Friday night against the St. Louis Blues, but they also lost on Saturday night against the Nashville Predators.

With the Panthers losing back to back games the Red Wings have a shot to gain even more ground on them.

Petr Mrazek is the expected starter for this afternoon’s game against the Boston Bruins. Jimmy Howard most likely will get the start on Monday afternoon.

The Boston Bruins are arguably the most surprising team in the NHL this season. After trading Milan Lucic and Dougie Hamilton in the offseason some pundits, myself included, thought the Bruins were going to be lousy this season.

Boy were we wrong, the Bruins have jumped the Red Wings and are currently second in the Atlantic Division. They are led by Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron.

Tukka Rask is the expected starter this afternoon as Jonas Gustavsson, remember him Red Wings fans, got the start last night for the Bruins.
