With the All-Star break around the corner, the Detroit Tigers will soon need to decide if they’re going to be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline.

The Detroit Tigers enter play on Tuesday as a .500 ball club with a 38-38 record. But, with more than half of the season left to play, they’re in position to compete for a playoff spot if they can get their act together with a sustained period of above-.500 play.

The question, though, is whether or not the current construction of the club — the pitching staff in particular — can sustain the sort of run it will take to stay in the hunt through July, August, and September.

The recent sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Indians (again!) has many fans and writers turning their attention to the idea of another summer selloff — the hottest of takes has already declared the season over — despite the fact that the Tigers remain just 2.5 games out of Wild Card position.

A strong push leading up to the All-Star break will likely push them toward buy mode. On top of the wish list? A middle-to-back of the rotation arm and a relief pitcher or two.

The Tigers’ postseason chances rest on whether or not they have (or can acquire) enough pitching to stay afloat.

The Tigers have 12 game remaining before the All-Star break: two home games against the Miami Marlins and then a 10-game road trip that will take them to Tampa, Cleveland, and Toronto to finish up the first half.
