The Detroit Lions announced on Wednesday that they were placing running back Ameer Abdullah on the reserve/injured list after foot surgery.

The Detroit Lions placed Ameer Abdullah on injured reserve on Wednesday due to a foot injury he suffered on a 24-yard run in the second quarter against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

The team admitted that Abdullah had surgery on his foot. He was originally believed to have suffered only a foot sprain after having X-rays and MRIs on Monday, but the team wanted a second opinion to determine the cause of the swelling in his foot. Josina Anderson of ESPN reported on Monday that Abdullah was scheduled to visit Dr. Robert Anderson, an expert on foot injuries, in North Carolina on Tuesday.

Abdullah may be able to return to the team later this season if the Lions choose to re-activate him. The Lions are allowed to choose one player from injured reserve to reactivate after week eight. When asked if Abdullah might be able to return in 2016, Lions head coach Jim Calwell said, “We’ll see.”

Abdullah had been dealing with a shoulder injury in the preseason and was limited by the team for a time, but was fully active and healthy by week one. He carried 18 times for 101 yards, leading the team, and caught five passes for 57 yards and a touchdown in the team’s first two games before his most recent injury.

The Lions will lean more heavily going forward on Theo Riddick, who has 173 total yards and two total touchdowns through the first two weeks. The team also has rookie Dwayne Washington on the roster, as well as Zack Zenner, who had been a healthy scratch for each of the first two games. The team re-signed George Winn to the practice squad on Wednesday and worked out former Lion Joique Bell on Tuesday.

The Lions signed wide receiver Aaron Dobson on Wednesday as well.
