The Detroit Lions and New England Patriots have agreed on a trade involving linebacker Kyle Van Noy according to ESPN reports.

Deals leading up to the NFL trade deadline are rare compared to the flurry of activity the other major leagues see, but the Detroit Lions have made a deal. According to a report tweeted by ESPN’s Field Yates, the Lions have sent linebacker Kyle Van Noy to the New England Patriots.

Van Noy has been a disappointment since being a second-round draft pick of the Lions in the 2014 NFL Draft. Injuries slowed his progress as a rookie and he has failed to become the impact player so many expected following his career at BYU.

Still, the move comes as a surprise given the Lions’ depth issues at linebacker. DeAndre Levy has been sidelined since week one with no clarity as to when he might return. Beat writers Justin Rogers and Dave Birkett have speculated the bye week as a possibility but the Lions still have two games to play before that time.

One option would be to re-sign Josh Bynes, who was released from injured reserve last month by the team but is now eligible to re-sign. Jon Bostic could also be heading for a return from injured reserve.

UPDATE: Dave Birkett reports that Josh Bynes is signing with the Lions

The Patriots are no stranger to taking on reclamation projects, and the trade for Van Noy comes two months after they acquired Barkevious Mingo from the Cleveland Browns.

The Lions and Patriots have been frequent trade partners of late, dating back to last season when tight end/offensive lineman Michael Williams was sent to New England in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. The Lions also acquired linebacker Jon Bostic from New England for a conditional draft pick following Bob Quinn’s appointment as general manager.

Yates followed up with some info on the return.

It’s no surprise the Lions didn’t get much in return given Van Noy’s play but it highlights how little of a future he had with the team. He had opportunities to perform but just didn’t and now he’s shipped off for something in return.
