Detroit Lions news for today dials in on a couple DeAndre Levy mentions that suggest his return to the field might not be too far in the future.

While Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell defaulted to his usual “we’ll see” in his press conference today, there are growing rumblings that DeAndre Levy might be close to a return.

Details regarding Levy’s injury or any semblance of a timetable for his return have been nonexistent from the team. They have chosen not to address the situation beyond referring to the injury report, which of course does not even address many of the questions beat writers have asked of Caldwell. That approach has led to a lot of fan frustration and made Levy the unwarranted target when speaking out on important topics like domestic abuse.

Given the lack of information that has been out there about Levy’s current situation, one of Justin Rogers‘ answers in his Detroit News mailbag this week caught my attention:

"Levy isn’t likely to be lacing them up the next two weeks, but there’s a reasonable chance he’s back after the bye, when the team hosts Jacksonville on Nov. 20."

My ears perked up again when reading this in Dave Birkett’s article on the Lions’ trade of Kyle Van Noy:

"Levy is expected back from the knee injury that has sidelined him since Week 1 around the Lions’ Week 10 bye."

Wording like “reasonable chance” and “expected” jumped off the page at me and it’s not wording that either reporter would use recklessly. Caldwell may still be sticking with giving non-answers on the podium but it’s clear these two very good beat reporters are starting to get some info. A return after the bye would see Levy miss two more games, but that’s much better than the scenario many fans have worked up in their minds.

Obviously there is still some uncertainty to targeting after the bye for a return, and perhaps that is why this info doesn’t seem to be gaining much attention. Setbacks can and do happen and Levy has a history of slow progress going back to last season. His 2015 injury-plagued season was initially described by the team as short-term but Levy appeared in just one game. Still, it’s starting to sound like Levy will suit up again sometime next month.
