The Michigan State Spartans’ football season came to a disappointing end on Saturday in a 45-12 loss to the #7 Penn State Nittany Lions.

The #7 Penn State Nittany Lions clinched the Big Ten East and claimed the Land Grant Trophy on Saturday as they routed the Michigan State Spartans 45-12.

Michigan State scored first, a 12-play, 76-yard drive ending on a 28-yard Michael Geiger field goal in the first quarter. The Spartans had the ball four times in the first half, each possession lasted at least 11 plays and ended on a Geiger field goal.

After Geiger’s second field goal, a 36-yarder, Penn State responded with one of their own, Tyler Davis capping off a ten-play, 60-yard drive with a 35-yard field goal to cut the lead to 6-3 early in the second. Tyler O’Connor checked into the game at quarterback for Michigan State, replacing Damion Terry, who left with a concussion. Geiger’s third field goal, this one from 33 yards away, put the Spartans up by six.

The Nittany Lions scored the first touchdown of the game on their next drive, Saquon Barkley scoring from one yard out to finish off a ten-play, 78-yard drive and put Penn State up for the first time, 10-9, near the end of the second quarter. The Spartans launched their fourth consecutive scoring drive as the half wound down, Geiger converting a 21-yard field goal, his fourth of the game, to give Michigan State a 12-10 lead at halftime.

The Spartans’ failure to finish drives with touchdowns came back to bite them in the second half, as Penn State scored touchdowns on two conseutive drives to take control of the game. Trace McSorley found Chris Godwin for a 34-yard touchdown to give the Nittany Lions the lead then threw a 45-yard touchdown to Mike Gesicki to increase the lead to 24-12 late in the third quarter.

After an O’Connor fumble, McSorley found Godwin for a score for the second time in the game, a 59-yard touchdown that put Penn State ahead 31-12 as the teams went to the fourth quarter. The Nittany Lions continued to pour in on as the fourth quarter wound down, Andre Robinson running for a 14-yard score and catching a 40-yard touchdown pass from McSorley as Penn State romped to a 45-12 victory.
