The Michigan State Spartans will try to improve from their recent lackluster performances as they host the Youngstown State Penguins on Tuesday.

The Michigan State Spartans (5-4) host the Youngstown State Penguins (5-4) of the Horizon League on Tuesday in the second of five straight home games against minor conference opponents.

The Spartans will be the first power conference opponent for the Penguins, whose offense flows through junior guard Cameron Morse. Morse, a Flint, Mich. native, ranks fifth in Division I with 23.7 points per game but missed both of Youngstown State’s last two games with a wrist injury and there has been no word regarding his availability for Tuesday.

In Morse’s absence, the Penguins’ other junior guard, Francisco Santiago, has stepped up, scoring 20 points in both of Youngstown State’s last two games. He also snagged a double-double with 10 assists in the Penguins’ most recent game, an 87-72 win over Oberlin College on Saturday.

The Penguins have some depth, with nine players averaging ten minutes or more per game, and play several players who can clean up the glass, including 7’1″ Jordan Kaufman, who leads the team with seven rebounds a game.

The Spartans will be without their star freshman, leading scorer and rebounder Miles Bridges, for their second consecutive game after he picked up an ankle injury last week which will keep him sidelined for a couple of weeks. Michigan State has been less than impressive in recent days, nearly being upset by Oral Roberts at home on Saturday after a 4-4 start in November, including losing all four of their matchups with ranked opponents.

There is some good news for the Spartans, however. Freshman Nick Ward stepped up with 24 points and 10 rebounds in extended action off the bench on Saturday and is Michigan State’s number-three scorer and number-two rebounder despite playing fewer than 17 minutes per game.

Senior Eron Harris has picked up his production, scoring in double digits in six of his last seven games and leading all healthy Spartans with 12.8 points per game. Freshman Cassius Winston and junior Lourawls Nairn Jr. have proven to be good distributors from the point, combining for nearly ten assists and fewer than four turnovers per game, however the Spartans as a team still commit 15 turnovers per game and shoot only 64% from the free throw line.
