Steve Ott was scratched from the Detroit Red Wings game on Tuesday night, then traded to the Montreal Canadiens for a future draft pick.

The Detroit Red Wings continue to make moves ahead of this afternoon’s trade deadline, this time trading Steve Ott to the Montreal Canadiens. In exchange, the Red Wings will received a sixth round pick in the 2018 draft.

It’s a late-round pick and it’s not even in the next draft, but it’s at least something in return for a player that many fans wouldn’t have signed in the first place. The 34-year old Ott was signed by the Red Wings to a one-year deal last offseason as the latest example of a marginal veteran muddying the playing time waters for younger players.

Ott tweeted his goodbye as most Red Wings fans slept.

The Ott trade comes on the heels of the Red Wings sending defenseman Brendan Smith to the New York Rangers for a pair of draft picks and it is unlikely to be their last trade.

Thomas Vanek continues to be rated the number two player available on TSN’s trade bait list. Riley Sheahan also makes the list, checking in at number 13 as of this morning.
