With the 2017 NFL Draft over and done with, the 2017 Detroit Lions are taking shape. There is a long way to go before the roster is trimmed down to a “final” 53 for the regular season, but what took place during the draft gives some insight into how general manager Bob Quinn views the current roster and some clues as to what might be ahead.

Another large draft class – nine players after ten were drafted in 2016 – in addition to two free agency periods means Quinn has taken little time to make his mark on the roster.

In some cases, the last two drafts have been bad news for veteran holdovers brought in by the previous front office, but that’s not true across the board.

A second draft under the direction of Quinn gives a better idea of his overall philosophy and how he goes about roster building through the draft.

Here are some observations now that we’re on the other side of the draft to discuss what it means and what we learned.
