The Detroit Pistons just showed off their uniform advertisement for this season. Let’s go in and dissect why it’s not as bad as it could be.

When the NBA announced brands would have a patch on jerseys, fans were slightly against the idea. This afternoon, the Detroit Pistons held a press conference to announce their partnership with Flagstar Bank as their jersey ad partner. And after seeing it, I decided to be a fashion blogger, and talk about why I think it’s actually a fine ad to have on a jersey.

Biggest Surprise

Honestly, I can’t believe Detroit decided to go with a bank. If I was a betting man, I would have put all my money on an automotive ad. I mean the team is the Pistons. A piston is a car part. Detroit is the Motor City. They have an alternate jersey that has the words “Motor City” on it. One of the Detroit automakers should have pounced on this ad space.

But instead, it’s a bank. Flagstar Bank is headquartered in Michigan, so it does make some sense. If you’re not going to go with a car company in Detroit, just be sure it’s local.

Biggest Relief

And here’s where I was shaking in my boots before the announcement. I was so nervous about the patch ruining the flow of a jersey. And there is a reason for that fear. Just take a peek at what the Brooklyn Nets will have to deal with.

It’s a red logo, featured on a black and white jersey. If they were still in their New Jersey Nets uniforms this might make some sense, but here it doesn’t. And sure, maybe they tweak it, changing the color so it works a little better. But today, that looks gross. How annoyed would you be if you wanted a D’Angelo Russell jersey, but know you have to get one like that?

The Pistons at least found and picked a company that complements their uniform. This made me happier, even if it wasn’t a major point in the decision. If you squint and look at it, you might not even notice it’s there.

Final Thoughts

Ads on jerseys were inevitable. It makes the NBA more money and gives brands a chance to show their logo more and more. But as long as the logo doesn’t devalue the product that is the jersey, I’m fine with it.

I was a little saddened when I saw that the jerseys didn’t change other than switching over to Nike. They did add a new logo to the shorts, but I was slightly hoping for an overhaul. I haven’t seen what the alternate uniforms will be yet, so I’ll be holding onto my hope for those.
