This is where it gets hard. This is the portion where you find old pictures or an old note and you start to get emotional. Mathis has been the ageless wonder for the Lions and has been the best thing to happen to this secondary in years. He is the big brother to the young secondary. He mentors them and his voice is always the loudest when it comes to this secondary.

Having said that, he is 34 years old and if he stays he will be 35 going into the pre-season. Age is often a factor in the NFL. Once guys reach a certain age they begin to decline and eventually go away. Mathis has done the exact opposite. He has completely turned everything around and put in two of the best years of his career. Because he is the ageless wonder and a mentor to the young guys in the locker room, like those pictures in the attic, I think I’ll hold on to him for a little longer.
