Jim Schwartz has released his first position evaluations of the preseason and there are a few surprises on the Detroit Lions Depth Chart.

On the offensive side of the ball the only real surprises come on the offensive line. Lions 3rd round draft pick Larry Warford projected by many to fit into a starting role is listed as 3rd string at right guard.  Central Michigan’s Darren Keyton has the early lead for back-up center behind veteran center Dominic Raiola.  As suspected, Riley Reiff figured to be the starting left tackle.

Defensive Depth Chart

On the defensive side of the ball, Defensive end Ziggy Anshah is penciled as the starter at defensive end with newly acquired free agent Isreal Idonijie listed as second string.  Free agent signee Jason Jones is holding down the other defensive end position. Although initial reports about him have been impressive, 2nd round pick CB Darius Slay is currently listed on the 2nd team behind Ron Bartell.

Special Teams Depth Chart

Several special teams battles are also raging. David Akers maintains a lead at kicker despite twitter reports of 65 yard practice field goals by “Kickalicious” Havard Rugland. Meanwhile, 5th round pick Sam Martin is reportedly the clear leader for the starting punter position. Micheal Spurlock is the early favorite to return kicks.

The Detroit Lions open the preseason schedule against the New York Jets on August 9th at Ford Field. After that game it is expected the team will make more cuts as it pares down the roster.
