From word around the league, it seems that Max Scherzer will be headed to the Washington Nationals.

This seems to be a surprise out of left field to most everyone. Looking around the different stories, it seems that the contract between the two could be 7-years $180 million. Which made myself think the idea of holding out with players who demand outrageous amounts of money then have a pretty weak market for themselves will eventually take less, idea was a good one.

However, pretending to be a major league General Manager aside, this “close deal” between the Nationals and Scherzer seems a little odd in the sense that he finally gave into to less money, yet the Tigers aren’t at the other end of this deal. I will stand strong in my statement that Maxwell Scherzer is not a $200 million dollar pitcher, he just isn’t.

Now, $180 million? Sure I think you’re worth that. Maybe more in the $150 million range, but for the sake of getting a deal done, $180 will work. Why aren’t the Detroit Tigers barking up this tree? How did the Washington Nationals manage to talk Scherzer down from the $200 million dollar wall but the Tigers couldn’t?

While I don’t care to talk ill of people, Scott Boras is a guy I will speak ill of until the day I die. Not to sound crazy or anything, but what if this is a whole plot by Boras to get the market for Scherzer up again? Or just to make the Tigers think, “well maybe we should get back into this if he will take less”.

While that may be a stretch and probably not true because lets face it, contract deals now a day are never that much fun for guys to start making these mastermind plots to get what they want. Now they just hold out until they find someone who will pay them or given just enough to make it seem like they won in the end. Here is hoping that maybe it is and it will kick the Tigers in the but to make him another offer.

Wishful thinking didn’t do much because a little after midnight, news broke that Scherzer and the Nationals had agreed to terms.

In the end the annoying part in this situation is that the Tigers seemed to show little to no interest into signing Scherzer at all. While they went out and got some pitching this offseason, it isn’t Scherzer pitching, something we know is good and reliable. Whenever Dave Dombrowski is asked about signing the right hand pitcher he always says “probably not” or “not likely”.

Why? I know you didn’t want to pay him what he asked and that is fine, but at least try to talk him down and now that he clearly is showing willingness to take less than he asked, why aren’t you showing any urgency to sign him again? I don’t see the team keeping David Price all season, but at this point if they can’t sign Scherzer they will have to keep Price just to have a rotation.

What do you guys think? What do you make of the Scherzer saga seeming to come to an end? What effect will this have on the tea this year, any? none? Let us know below.
