The Michigan State Spartans will welcome the return of Miles Bridges as they host the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Wednesday.

Miles Bridges will be back in uniform for the Michigan State Spartans on Wednesday as they take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Wednesday in their first game of 2017.

Bridges, who missed the last seven games with an ankle injury, dressed, warmed up and sat on the bench for the Spartans’ win over Northwestern on Friday. “I was hoping Coach would be mad enough to be like, ‘Miles, get in there,’” Bridges said on Monday, “but he didn’t do that because we were playing so good. I just wanted to warm up and get a feel for game.”

Bridges is Michigan State’s leading average scorer and rebounder, with 16.6 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. He is participating in nearly every drill in practice but his minutes are expected to be limited on Wednesday.

In Bridges’ absence, other Michigan State freshmen have stepped up, including Nick Ward, the team’s second-leading average scorer and rebounder (13.6 points, 6.8 rebounds per game), and Cassius Winston, who leads the team in assists (six per game). Senior Alvin Ellis III has also played well in the last two games, scoring 36 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in the Spartans’ two wins.

The Spartans began their Big Ten schedule with a comeback win in overtime over Minnesota last week and a win over Northwestern in their conference home opener on Friday. Michigan State is one of three Big Ten teams yet to lose in conference, along with #13 Wisconsin (13-2, 2-0) and Nebraska (8-6, 2-0).

The Scarlet Knights began their season 11-1, only losing at Miami, before dropping three straight to Seton Hall, Wisconsin and Penn State.

Junior forward Deshawn Freeman averages 11.5 points and leads Rutgers with 8.5 rebounds per game but has been kept in check during the Scarlet Knights’ losing streak, averaging 6.7 points and 5.3 rebounds in their last three games.

Rutgers comes into Wednesday’s game with the conference’s least productive offense, scoring only 70.2 points per game. The Scarlet Knights struggle to shoot overall, making only 42.7% of their field goals and 29.4% of their three-point attempts as a team.  Four different Scarlet Knights average double-digit points, led by Mike Williams with 12.1 points per game.
