The Detroit Tigers and their record in one run games

Baseball is one of those sports taht loves it snumbers. Truth be told we can make the numbers of baseball say what ever we want them to say. However, there are a few numbers out there that DJC would like for Tigers fans to keep in mind. They are:

September 24, 2012; Detroit, MI, USA; Detroit Tigers first baseman Prince Fielder (28) scores a run during the eighth inning against the Kansas City Royals at Comerica Park. Detroit won 6-2. Mandatory Credit: Rick Osentoski-US PRESSWIRE

  • 17-27
  • .386

The first is the Tigers record so far in 2012 when the game is decided by one run. The second is theri winning [percetage for those games. For a team with the reining America League Cy Young winner pitching for it this seems to be the key stat. 27 times the Tigers have lost a game by one run.  That is right around 16% of the 162 games they will play. That might not seems like a lot, but if they Tigers had won say like five or six more of those one run games they would be running away wit hte divison corwn.

Other nubmers that are a tab bit surpsing:

  • The Tiers are 4-5 in extra inning games
  • Just 16-14 in blowout games (games decided by five runs or more)
  • 0-1 in games that were shortened

So when we add all of that they are 4-6 in games that are not exactly nine innings, but that does not amount to much in the grand scheme of things.

Again these wierd kinda games may not mean a lot on the surface, but let us not forget taht the Tigers sit just one game back on the Chicago White Sox for the lead in the divsion. A better result in any one of thiese special catergoires could be the difference between teh Tiers in the post season, or a long winter for Detroit sports fans (yes folks there is still no hockey).
