Today is draft day.  The day that you have been anticipating since the lights went out on Super Bowl Sunday.  For you it is time to bring out your lucky underwear, your charts, graphs and stats in preparation for Fantasy Football.  For your wife or girlfriend it is a glimpse into the hell she has to prepare for this coming fall.

You are now faced with a game day decision.  Run to your man cave without her and devise a plan of fancy dinners, diamonds and foot rubs to make up with her later, or invite her in to the rush of the 2013 NFL Draft.

That’s right, I said it.  Invite her in to the rush and the excitement of the draft.  Now that your hearts have been restarted, I have devised a plan in 3 easy steps to get your girl to not only watch the draft but to get excited for pre season.

Step 1 – Share

This is easy.  You got this! Now, I don’t mean, “I love to hang out with my buddies, drink beer and chest bump all day long.”  That is not going to cut the mustard.   Think back, there was something or someone that sparked your interest in the game.

Growing up in Canton, Ohio, football was a way of life.  Football is when my family gathered on crisp fall sundays gathered around the fireplace as my father and brother in laws taught me the basics of the game.  Trips to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and watching my favorite player Mean Joe Greene get inducted into the Hall of Fame are all reasons that I love football.

Maybe for you it was the team work of playing the game in high school or college, or the touch football games in the park.  Whatever it is tell her.

Step 2 – Connect

This step may be a little more difficult for some of you.  If you are a guy that loves to spout off stats, you may need turn that part of your brain off for a few minutes and get in touch with your, well your sensitive side.  You know your girl.  Does she like sappy movies, does she root for the underdog, does she like to see someone do great things after dealing with the hardships of life?  Use this to your advantage.

The draft is an excellent place to create this connection.  It is predicted that the Detroit Lions will be looking at Louisiana State cornerback Tyrann Mathieu.  Now there is a lot to say about this prospect, that in 2011 he racked up 76 tackles and intercepted 2 passes, he is 5ft. 9 and runs the 40 yard dash in 4.5 seconds.  Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.  Turn off the stat machine!

Here you go, try this on for size:

You:  “ Schnookums, did you hear who the Detroit Lions are looking to draft this year?”

Your Girl:  “No” – as she rolls her eyes.

You:  “They are looking at one of the most controversial players in this years draft, Tyrann Mathieu”

Your Girl:  “Oh really, why is he so controversial?” ( A little intrigued)

You:  “He is from LSU and played in 2011, but didn’t play in 2012 because he violated a bunch of team rules.”

Your Girl:  “Oh wow”

You:  “The dude has been pretty straightforward with the NFL about his drug use and how he is cleaning up his act, he even tested clean during the combine in February.”

Your Girl:  “That is awesome, I hope they do draft him that would be great for this kid.”

That wasn’t too hard.  The seed has now been planted.

Step 3 – Illustrate

You have shared your love of the game with your girl and you have helped her to connect to the players.  Now what?  It’s time for you to roll up your sleeves and get a little dirty.  You need to watch The Voice.  Go to your TV and watch the blind auditions of The Voice.  This is how you will paint the picture.

The Voice, a singing competition in which 4 famous singers listen to blind auditions to create teams to win the coveted distinction of winning with someone they hand picked.

Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Usher and Shakira while only listening to the contestants begin to build their teams based on things such as style of music they sing, their strengths and do they have the basics down.  Do you smell what I’m cookin?

What are the coaches and owners looking for during the 2013 NFL Draft?  Players to round out their teams.  They may need a Quarterback (R&B singer), or wide receiver (Country singer).  They may be looking at how fast they ran the 40 yard dash or how much weight they can lift.  The coaches on The Voice are looking to see if they have the basics of music.  Pitch, rhythm and phrasing.
