2012 Overview:
The Lions safety position was in shambles all season, using a combined eight safety’s throughout the season. Delmas was in and out of the secondondary due to injuries — showing his value when placed in the starting lineup. They had five interceptions as a unit, but were often out of position giving up big plays to the opposition.
Strong Safety:
1. Louis Delmas:
The Lions were able to bring Delmas back, forming the top safety duo of the decade. He brings hard hitting, leadership and intensity to the Lions secondary. If Delmas can stay healthy, the defensive secondary will be much improved from a year ago.
2. Don Carey:
Carey was the most productive Lions safety last season, according to Pro Football Focus. He carried a +3.4 overall grade while intercepting two passes on 366 snaps. So far at OTA’s — with Louis Delmas sidelined while rehabbing his knee — Carey has ran alongside Quin with the first string defense. Carey is a key member of the secondaries rotation, and should Delmas’ injuries continue, he could find time on the field more than expected.
3. Ricardo Silva:
Silva has been the darling of preseason play in back-to-back seasons. He stepped up for the Lions when injuries occurred, and will look to become a valuable member off the bench for the Lions in 2013.
Free Safety:
1. Glover Quin:
Arguably the offseason’s best move for the Lions, Quin brings a perfect compliment to fellow safety Louis Delmas. He can play in centerfield, or move into the box on running downs. He had 84 tackles and two interceptions for the Houston Texans last season.
2. John Wendling:
Wendling has been a steady force on special teams for the Lions since becoming apart of the team in 2010. They will continue to rely on his experience and leadership in 2013.
2013 Preview:
This group is greatly improved from a year ago. Glover Quin comes in as a talented veteran, while Don Carey and Ricardo Silva have made drastic strides since the end of last season. With renewed health from Delmas, the Lions could turn a weakness into a strength.
