2012 Overview:

The Lions entered the season with Jason Hanson, Ben Graham and Don Muhlbach as the three specialists. Ben Graham failed to get the job done, prompting the return of Nick Harris. Muhlbach was granted respect from the league, earning a NFC Pro Bowl appearence. Hanson hit 88.9% of his field goal attempts — well above his 82.4% career average — while hitting a 53-yard field goal.

Kicker:

David Akers:

Although Harvard “Kickalacious” Rugland has gotten all the attention, his accuracy has been called into question early. Akers being a veteran who has held his own throughout the season, the Lions will look for consistency as they move on from Jason Hanson.

Punter:

Sam Martin:

The Lions signed Blake Clingan early in the offseason, but he has yet to see an NFL field. Martin, however, was the Lions fifth round selection out of Appalachian State who, through the teams OTA’s, has impressed the coaches. It’s Martin’s job to lose as we near the start of training camp.

Long Snapper:

Don Muhlbach:

There’s no denying who will be the long snapper this upcoming season. Fresh off a pro bowl season, Muhlbach looks to regain his 2012 form.

2013 Preview:

The 2013 season will look very different for Lion fans this year. Jason Hanson had been the teams kicker for over 20 seasons, were he broke multiple team and NFL records. The Lions hope Akers can stabilize one of the few positions that fans could take pride in.
