Dumars pulled the second biggest blockbuster trade of the summer behind the Celtics/Nets trade. Â When the trade was first rumored, and denied, by Joe Dumars, many thought Rodney Stuckey would be packing his bags. Â Instead it was Brandon Knight who was sent to the Bucks in exchange for Brandon Jennings.
Joe Dumars told everyone who would listen that Brandon Knight was his point guard headed into the 2013-14 season. He was behind Knight despite criticism that he lacked the ability to create with the pass. Â In fact, when most experts broke down the failures of the Pistons last year they cited Knight inability to run the point.
That is why the trade for Brandon Jennings was a head scratcher on a number of levels. Brandon Jennings is a scorer to be sure but also considered a shoot first point guard. Â Jennings acquisition creates problems for new head Coach Maurice Cheeks when he is dividng up the playing time. Is Jennings an upgrade over Knight? Â Sure. Â But it is difficult to see how the guard rotation will work considering all the players expecting minutes.
The price was also high for this trade. Â Brandon Knight still figures to be a possible developing star in the NBA and Khris Middleton was poised to have a breakout season for the boys from Auburn Hills.
