Michigan Wolverines vs Central Michigan Chippewas Final Score: Michigan Routs CMU 59-9

The Michigan Wolverines had a bad taste in their mouth after their loss to South Carolina in last years Outback Bowl.  They used the Central Michigan Chippewas to cleanse their palate.  The Wolverines embarrassed the Chippewas by rolling up a 59 points including 5 rushing touchdowns on 242 rushing yards.

Devin Gardner looked a little rusty in his sixth career start at Quarterback.  He threw two interceptions but did manage to throw a one TD pass to Jeremy Gallon in the second quarter.  What Gardner wasn’t able to do through the air he made up for on the ground. Gardner scored two rushing touchdowns while running through the porous Central Michigan defense. All in all,  Gardener showed he was capable of leading Brady Hokes pro-style offense by racking up 214 yards and 3 total touchdowns.

The Chippewas looked poorly prepared and shell-shocked at times. This was not a good way for Chippewas head coach Dan Enos to start a pivotal season in his coaching career at Central.  Enos lead the Chippewas to a 7-6 record in 2012 and was hoping to continue the success with a decent showing against Michigan.  Instead of a decent showing, the Chippewas looked more like a 1-AA school  playing out of their league.

It is unclear whether this game can be used as a measuring stick for Michigan.  It was hard to tell if Michigan’s running game was that potent or CMU’s defense that inept.  Either way, we will find out when Michigan welcomes Notre Dame to the Big House on September 7th.
