2013 ALDS Game 3: Victor Martinez and Grant Balfour Face-off In Tigers Loss Oakland Leads Series 2-1

Game 3 of the series was highlighted by a verbal confrontation between the Tigers DH Victor Martinez and Oakland closer Grant Balfour. The benches cleared, players were shoved, but the end result was a Tigers loss.  But did the confrontation inspire the Tigers offense?  Or was it the return of Jhonny Peralta to the starting line-up?

Jhonny Peralta To Start Game 3

"Jim Leyland is concerned about the offense.  He should be. Especially considering how the offense fizzled in the 2012 postseason.  To spark the offense Jim Leyland announced on Sunday that he will be starting Jhonny Peralta to get an “extra base bat” in the line-up."

ALDS Game 3 Preview: Sanchez gets a turn

"ALDS Game 3 between the Tigers and Athletics will begin tomorrow afternoon.  The Tigers are looking to get their offense back on track after being shut-out over the last 17 innings in the ALDS. The last time the Tigers scored a run it was courtesy of an Alex Avila single that scored Victor Martinez in the first inning of game 1.  Since then the Tigers bats have been lifeless."

ALDS Game 3 Results: Balfour Rage Trumps Tigers Bats

"The Oakland A’s defeated the Detroit Tigers 6-3 in an intense ALDS Game 3.  It wasn’t a good day for Anibal Sanchez.  He gave up 6 runs in 4 1/3 innings including 3 home runs leading to a 3 run deficit after 6 innings of play."

Balfour Doesn’t Intimidate V-Mart

"ALDS Game 3 got a little chippy in the ninth. Grant Balfour, who is normally animated on the mound, had some words for Martinez between pitches that Victor took exception to. What did Balfour say?"
