The Central Michigan Chippewas and Eastern Michigan Eagles square off for the Michigan MAC Trophy. Both teams are out of bowl consideration and winning the Michigan MAC trophy would go a long way to salvaging disappointing seasons.
The Michigan Mac Trophy is awarded to one of the three Michigan Teams in the MAC conference. The winner of the trophy is the team with the best record after a round robin between The Western Michigan Broncos, Central Michigan Chippewas and Eastern Eagles.
Central beat Western at Waldo Stadium 27-22 on November 16th. Eastern Beat Western on November 9th 35-32 in overtime.
Central Michigan has a little more to lose than Eastern does. The Chippewas come into the game 5-6 and a win would make them bowl eligible (though highly unlikely). Winning the Michigan MAC trophy would allow the Chips to walk away with some hardware this season.
Eastern Michigan has had a very difficult season. The Eagles had to deal more than its fair share of adversity in dealing with the murder of a teammate on campus early in the season and the firing of head coach Ron English on the eve of their game with Western. After rallying late to beat the Broncos the Eagles would love to add this game to the win column and the trophy to the mantle.
Central Michigan Head Coach Dan Enos knows the Eagles have a lot to play for, but so do the Chips.
"Every team we play is going to be ready to go,” said Enos. “This is college football. Their seniors are playing their last game and it will be a highly-motivated football team. They’ve had adversity and we tell our team that adversity is part of life. You have to deal with it and it looks like their coaches are doing a very good job of keeping the team together.”"
If the Chippewas win they will have to wait and see if they will get a bowl invite. In 2012, Central Michigan won the Little Ceasers Pizza Bowl after going 6-6 in the regular season.
With plenty of strong teams to choose from like #14 Northern Illinois, Bowling Green, Buffalo and Ball State, Central will likely not get an invite this year even of they beat Eastern.
