When I first heard that Stan Van Gundy had to choose between the Detroit Pistons and the Golden State Warriors I thought for sure he would pick the Warriors. Then I found out the Pistons were going to give him power over player decisions and I knew he would pick the Pistons over the Warriors even though the Warriors are the better team right now.
The reason is his last two jobs he has been fired because the players did not get along with him. But the Pistons need a coach that will bring some grit. The club needs to back their Coach fully and with this power it will not be the players running this team any more. Too many times under Joe Dumars the head coach would say I need you to back me but Joe always seemed to back the players. That is why the Detroit Pistons were forced to give Stan Van Gundy the final say over the roster.
Stan Van Gundy is a good coach who has taking a team to the NBA finals, I believe this is a great decision by Tom Gores. Right now this team needs an over haul as they have to build around Andre Drummond. Stan Van Gundy has coached two of the best big men to ever play the game in Shaquille Oneal and Dwight Howard.
His winning record and experience with coaching great big men could be a great combination. Andre needs to develop his offense but his defense is some of the best in the NBA. Mr. Van Gundy knows what makes a good team in the NBA and hopefully will improve the Pistons sooner rather than later.
At the very least Stan Van Gundy does have interesting press conferences so that should be entertaining. That may be the only interesting thing at the Palace early on as it will take more than just this years off season to completely overhaul this roster. I believe this will be the best decision Tom Gores has made as Pistons owner and Stan Van Gundy will bring us back to the top of the NBA. This is the best thing to happen to the Pistons in a long time, could be a great off season.
