While many of us will be celebrating the 4th of July by BBQing and cracking a few frosty beverages, the Detroit Red Wings top prospects will be taking the ice at the team’s annual development camp.

The camp, put on by director of player development Jiri Fischer, will pit two groups of Red Wings prospects against each other in scrimmages today through Tuesday.  These scrimmages will give the prospects an opportunity to demonstrate their ability in live game action and get a possible invite to pre-season training camp.

More from Detroit Red Wings

Among the hopefuls will be highly touted prospect Anthony Mantha who is generating a lot of buzz after a stellar performance in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.  Mantha will be joined by 2013 second round pick Tyler Bertuzzi and 2014 picks Dylan Larkin and Dominic Turgeon.

One of the prospects sure to be on Ken Holland’s radar is defenseman Alexey Marchenko.  The 2013 AHL All-Star missed the second half of the season after undergoing surgery for an ankle injury. The Red Wings will be watching closely to see if Marchanko is healthy.

If everything checks out he could play a role in providing depth on the Red Wings blue line this season. Marchencko is just 22 but already has 5 years of pro hockey experience having spent the previous 4 season in the KHL.
