Few Lions fans had heard of tailback, George Winn when the Lions opened camp last month, even though he played high school ball 10 miles down the road.

Yet, here we are, some as hopeful as Winn himself that he can make a claim for the final running back spot on the Lions depth chart.

This is his last opportunity him to prove himself as Detroit will cut an additional 22 players off the squad in order to meet the league maximum of 53 players on the final roster come Saturday.

“It all counts, we look at every single angle, every single detail and there are positives and negatives and we just have to weigh those out.” – Lions Head Coach, Jim Caldwell on Winn

Winn has had an up and down preseason up until this point.

His role has slowly increased, to a point where he started on multiple special teams in Oakland and on kick coverage last week against Jacksonville. He even got some first-team reps in the offensive backfield, catching a 9-yard pass from Matthew Stafford and rushing twice for 7 yards.

However, he has also had ball security issues. He lost a fumble in the opener against Cleveland, then another against the Jaguars after he caught a pass.

If Winn doesn’t win a roster spot, which there is a strong possibility that he may not, his fumble issues could be a major reason why. Keep an eye on Winn Thursday, one more fumble could easily seal his fate.
