Big Upside

Shane Vereen

Until Superbowl 49, Vereen was probably the most underrated cog in the New England Patroit’s juggernaut offense.  Without Shane Vereen the Patroits don’t win Superbowl 49. Vereen has a very specific game.  He runs for yardage when put in the situation to succeed and he catches the ball as well as any back out there. He is also a skilled pass protector.

Vereen could have similar success in Detroit.  He could play the lightning to Joique Bells thunder and in a rotation that would give the opposing defenses something else to think about.  Vereen could excel in the Lions screen heavy offense that could effectively slow the pass rush and take pressure off the offensive line.

The 26-year-old free agent running back will demand a decent contract on the market this offseason but not anywhere near that of DeMarco Murray.  He could help boost the Lions backfield production for a little less than the cost of Reggie Bush.

Ryan Matthews

Mathews had an injury riddled season in 2014.  Shoulder, knee and ankle injuries all played a factor in his playing in just eight games last season.  The free agent running back from the San Diego Chargers has had his struggles with injury throughout his career.  However when he is healthy, Mathews has game changing speed and elusiveness.

The Detroit Lions could use the break away speed of Ryan Mathews as a compliment to Joique Bell.  Used as a tandem the two could really open up the Detroit Lions running game.

Another solid choice that could offer the Lions big bang for their free agent buck.
