Staying Quiet Could Help Detroit Red Wings at Trade Deadline

There are eight more days until the NHL Trade Deadline. Eight days for the Detroit Red Wings to decided if they want to trade for the playoff push that they will more than likely be in, or stay put with who they have and make no moves. Really what might be best for the Red Wings is for them to just stay quiet and be watchers more than sellers. History would be on the side of the Red Wings actually not making any moves at this years deadline.
If you look at what the Red Wings have for trade bait, I have a hard time giving really any of those players away. The Red Wings are a team that does very well when it comes to drafting and bringing players up through their organization. Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk both were late round draft pieces that worked out fantastic for the team. It is hard to say that this team can’t draft well, because I think as a fan I’m very happy with their drafting throughout the years.
Which is why I’m not sure I want the team to trade any players that they have unless another team comes around and drops a really nice piece in their lap. Mostly players that outside teams would want from the Red Wings would be the players such as Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha and Tomas Jurco, players I really don’t think are worth trading away yet. Those guys are the future of the team, those guys replace the Zetterbergs and Datsyuks after they retire.
The team is sitting third in their division and they seem to stay afloat well even after losing Jimmy Howard for a long period of time. This team shows it could afford to take some injury without losing terribly bad, in fact, with Howard out the team at some points looked better than when he was playing. I’m not saying that we should lose all hope in Howard because I still think he is our number one goalie for awhile. Mrazek can also be a future goalie for the team. I wouldn’t want to trade because I think his value is far more than teams will be willing to give up.
I think this team has a shot to win the Stanley Cup. I also don’t expect them to go forth and win it easily because I think the whomever comes out of the Western conference will be a test for whomever comes out of the Eastern Conference. If you have watched any of the Western Conference teams play, they are clearly the favorite to win the Stanley Cup. So as fans I don’t think that we should be expecting this team to go and be the frontrunner for the Stanley Cup. Which is why we shouldn’t be expecting the front office to make any big moves.

It just seems like if something is working for a team, such as drafting well, that maybe we should just keep going with that. That isn’t to say we can never trade again, because at some point you are probably going to have to, but don’t trade away players that one day you will regret because you just wanted to make a move or because you think you might have to when really, you don’t.
So as the trade deadline comes up, I can’t see the Detroit Red Wings wanting to do much unless they have a really good reason too. So if there is an injury in the next week or so, something that causes the team to lose a big player for a long period of time, there really isn’t much for the team to do. Unless a team comes in a drops a really good player in the Red Wings lap, why change much? This team is in their “rebuilding” time in ways. They are one of the few teams that can manage to rebuild without having to miss the playoffs and most the time their good players come from the draft so trading again seems unnecessary at least at this moment in time.
