Preparing for Ndamukong Suh’s departure

If you have been on Twitter, Facebook or even Tinder today than you have seen the Ndamukong Suh will be taking his talents to South Beach.

If your like me you have two sides of your brain fighting against each other. On one hand Ndamukong Suh is a Lion and I can’t see him in any other jersey. He is also a dominant force that helps the Lions defense be what it is and can be. On the other hand I grow tired of hearing the “dirtiest player” moniker and the Lions constant cap struggles that have plagued them for years.

Losing Suh at first won’t be fun. I’m sure there are fans out there that have their lighters and gasoline on standby just in case they need to burn a Suh jersey. To many including myself, this will feel like a betrayal at first. On an emotional level you forget that this is a business like any other business. Transactions happen in the NFL just as they do in the real world. unfortunately if you’re a child this is where you learn that loyalty is just a seven letter word that has an empty meaning. In the end we the fans can and will get over this and move on. Here’s a few ways that might help:

Go ahead and be mad.

Go ahead and burn the jersey (in a safe way of course) sell your autographs and tear up your posters. The first response may very well be to get rid of everything that says Suh on it to make it seem as though he never existed. Some will be angry in private, others will take to social media to call the man every name in the book. Go ahead and yell and scream and write your blogs. Riot if you feel it’s what you have to do (please do not riot).

Don’t worry be happy

Some Lions fans are rejoicing right now. It’s not crazy at all to think that way. As I said earlier, Suh leaving opens up cap space and helps he Lions climb out of the whole they have been in since drafting Matthew Stafford. This gives the Lions the opportunity to focus in on fixing multiple positions instead of putting all of the funds into one. The Lions have an opportunity to build a team and hope that the coaching staff can make it great.

Think about the future.

The first thing you could do is think about the future. As outlined in the last section, The Lions will have cap space to play with for the first time in a while. Not to say that every free agent will want to jump right into the Lions locker room, but with the success the team has had as of late, the belief could be that the Lions could be contenders this next season. The Lions also have the NFL Draft coming up in April and can continue to build their team there.

Suh’s departure does not mark the beginning of a rebuilding project. It opens up all kinds of fun possibilities. The idea that this is the end is not right. There are still 52 other guys that contributed to the Lions 11 win season and while losing Suh would leave a hole, the Lions should have no trouble filling it.

We will soon find out what the Detroit Lions will do. Remember this deal is not actually complete till Tuesday at 4 pm. The Lions could very well try to match or beat this deal. Would it be a wise move though?
