With baseball only about 17 days away, teams are going to start naming their opening day starters and for the Detroit Tigers, Brad Ausmus has named David Price as the opening day starter.
This will be very different for Tigers fans who have watched Justin Verlander every opening day for the last 5 plus seasons. Verlander has usually always been the leading guy in the rotation for the Tigers and having someone else opening the season is going to be weird for more than likely all fans.

Price was obtained last season in a trade that sent Drew Smyly and Austin Jackson to the Tampa Rays and Seattle Mariners. He pitched 248 innings and had 271 which both led Major League Baseball. He also ended the season with a 15-12 record and a 3.26 earned run average.
So is this a good move for the Tigers as they go into the 2015 season? While it might upset the fan that finally got opening day tickets because they thought they would get to see Justin Verlander, many might see the value of having Price start over Verlander. In an Mlive.com article by Chris Lott he points out three reasons why having Price be the opening day starter is a good thing.
Detroit Tigers
Lott’s points make a lot of sense if you are looking at this whole situation with some logical sense. Price is a better pitcher than Verlander, if the past three seasons are looked at numbers could tell you that. Price also has better numbers against the Cleveland Indians which if he is the starting day pitcher he would end up facing them and not Verlander. The Indians are seen as the Tigers biggest competitors in the American League Central and so having a guy that can go out there and dominate them, as Price has shown he can do, well come on guys that is just common sense.
Lastly Lott points out that the way that the schedule is set up that it goes into the favor of Price and like the point prior that he makes, having a guy that can dominate a team, well you want him out there at least once against them. It is a very good read and I suggest that you read the full article to get a full insight.

If anything, change might be a good thing for this team. Yeah you won’t get to see Verlander as the season starts, but you will see him again, in fact you will more than likely see him in their second game. Maybe this will be good for Verlander. Maybe he can relax now that he doesn’t have to be the number one ace for the Tigers and we will see him return to at least half his old self.
However, the big and important question is what do you as a fan think? Are you happy with this move? Are you frustrated with the move?
