The biggest need for the Detroit Lions heading into the 2015 season is on the offensive line. With a host of first round worthy linemen available in this years draft pool, the Detroit Lions will have plenty of choices when the 23rd picks rolls around. Because the Lions have a few holes on the line it opens up their ability to draft any position on the line.  Here are a few of the options that will be available at #23.

  • DJ Humphries – Is a rock steady choice for the Lions at #23 if he is on the board.  The former Florida Gator is pro-ready and would fit nicely for the Lions on either the left or right side.  The big question is whether he will be available by the time the Lions pick.  With sudden legal issues haunting top choice La’el Collins, Humphries could move to the top of many teams draft boards as the best offensive linemen in the draft.

The Bengals (#21) are also rumored to be looking hard at DJ Humphries.  The Carolina Panthers have so much interest they may be willing to jump ahead of the Lions in the pecking order.

Cameron Erving – Erving is a center sure but that won’t keep the Lions from picking him if he is on the board.  The Lions could move last years 5th round pick Travis Swanson inside and let Erving take over in the middle.  Choosing Erving would bolster the interior of the line and will certainly help the north-south running style of Joique Bell.

Andrus Peat – The Stanford tackle is the Detroit Lions choice according to Mike Mayock of NFL.com.  The draft guru actually has the Lions passing on Humphries to take Peat 23rd overall.  That said the Lions aren’t very high on Peat and if he is the only one on the board at the time they could go in a different direction.

La’el Collins is considered by many to be the best linemen in the draft but his recent legal troubles have team running away from him faster than Carl Lewis.  If Collins is around at #23 it could make for a very interesting decision by Martin Mayhew.

With plenty of options available look for the Lions to bolster their running game by improving at the point of attack.
