Drew Stafford
Age: 29
Position: RW
Previous team: Winnipeg Jets
Another Winnipeg Jet, Drew Stafford is a bit older, 29, but has so much upside, that I think next to Matt Beleskey is the front-runner for players the Red Wings should go after. He spent his entire NHL career in Buffalo before getting traded to Winnipeg. That is when he saw his career become something again, it just took a new place to do it. Winnipeg will more than likely sign him, but the Red Wings trying here would be nice to see.
He is a huge body at 6′ 2″ and 214 pounds. He is a skilled offensive player and has a great skill set. While the team is looking for physical guys, it is nice if you can get a physical guy along with the scoring ability that Stafford has. While he may be 29, he is still a young 29 and since he played in Buffalo who hasn’t seen the playoffs in a while, so he doesn’t have as much wear and tear on him as other 29-year-old players might.
This free agency season will be important for the Detroit Red Wings. They need to go out and get a young, physical player that can help the team longer than one season. This means that there needs to be some moving and shaking on the already existing roster, but the team is moving into a new era and this is one of the best ways to move.
