Detroit Red Wings to Face Mike Babcock in Season Opener

In news that only seems like the National Hockey League being a bunch of money smart marketers the Detroit Red Wings will be taking on the Toronto Maple Leafs in their season opener at Joe Louis Arena.

This is not only a great original six match up that are always fun, but also their first meeting against former head coach Mike Babcock. The NHL rookie head coach Jeff Blashill will get his first regular season match up with one of the greats in the past ten years. The NHL will release the full schedule tomorrow for all teams.

Red Wings lose interest in Phaneuf

The Red Wings don’t seem to be interested in Maple Leafs Dion Phaneuf. The team had been linked loosely to maybe acquiring him since the offseason had started. Yet according to Mlive’s Anser Khan the team is seemingly not interested anymore.

Datsyuk could make history

Pavel Datsyuk is up for his fifth Lady Byng Memorial Trophy. He could make history tonight at the NHL Awards. If he wins the Lady Byng, it would be his fifth and put him in a small group of two other players who have won it five or more times. Only Frank Boucher and Wayne Gretzky are in this group, Boucher won it seven times while Gretzky has won it five times.

The NHL Awards are on tonight at 7 p.m. on NBCSN. Datsyuk is the only Red Wings player up for an award.
