It has been Evgeny Svechnikov’s dream to play hockey and now he is getting that chance. Being the Detroit Red Wings first round pick in the 2015 NHL draft he will now get to continue living his dream.

"“It’s an amazing feeling, That’s my dream coming true. I’m so happy to be with the Detroit Red Wings."

So who exactly is this young kid that you could be watching as soon as this next season with the Red Wings? Well Svechnikov, if the name didn’t give it away is from Russia, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to be exact. Which on a map, is basically as far as you can go east in Russia.

That is where he started his hockey career. He started skating with the Ak Bar Kazan junior team in the MHL at the age of 16. That same season he represented Russia in three international tournaments. In the 2014 World Juniors scored 3 goals with 4 assists and four penalty minutes in five games.

In the 2014-15 season Scechnikov played for the Cape Benton Screaming Eagles and proved he was a top pick in this years draft. In 55 games this season with Cape Benton the young Russian netted 32 goals and 46 assists. He was also a plus 19 player in the regular season. He continued his high power play in seven games in the playoffs scoring 7 points (1-6) before the team was eliminated.

What does this guy bring to the Red Wings? Well the potential to be a scoring juggernaut that could one day be the next Pavel Datsyuk for this team. I’m not sure if Svechnikov will be with the big club when the regular season rolls around. Many Red Wings prospects spend some time down with the teams AHL squad the Grand Rapids Griffins before coming up.

The team had him playing with Dylan Larkin in this years prospect camp up in Traverse City.

It would be a sight to see these two play together in Grand Rapids this season and then maybe come up for the Playoff push or have them come up the following season and being on a line of their own.

It will be interesting to see where Svechnikov ends up when the regular season rolls around. A season down in Grand Rapids wouldn’t hurt him and will more than likely be his path, but maybe he shows up big in the preseason and gets a spot.
