Detroit Lions 2015 Schedule Preview: Kansas City Chiefs

Arrowhead Stadium gives the Kansas City Chiefs one of the NFL’s biggest home field advantages but the Detroit Lions don’t have to worry about that when the two teams meet this season.

Instead of playing in K.C., what was supposed to be a Chiefs home game was turned into a neutral field game as part of the NFL’s International Series in London, England.

There will be plenty to discuss about that dynamic as the game approaches. For now, I checked in with Arrowhead Addict‘s Matt Verderame about the Chiefs in general as they prepare to report to training camp.

Below are my questions followed by Matt’s answers.

1. How would you assess the team’s offseason? Did they do what they needed to do through the draft and free agency?

"The Chiefs had a better offseason than anybody could have expected considering the cap situation. While the team had a bad offensive line and lost center Rodney Hudson, general manager John Dorsey drafted Mitch Morse in the second round and traded for left guard Ben Grubbs. Dorsey also signed Paul Fanaika for depth. Then, he reeled in Jeremy Maclin to bolster he receivers. The roster looks very solid."

  • 2. Which rookie are you most excited to see play in 2015 and why?

"Marcus Peters. He’s big and very physical at corner, fitting into the press coverage scheme the Chiefs play. Peters had some behavior issues at college, but he’s a great fit on an already stout defense."

    3. What is the biggest question that still needs to be answered heading into training camp?

"Will the offensive line gel? The only returning starter is left tackle Eric Fisher. Grubbs will start at left guard and is a massive upgrade, but center will take a step back with Morse or Eric Amish replacing Hudson. Jeff Allen is returning from a season-ending elbow injury to likely start at right guard, while Donald Stephenson is at right tackle. The talent is pretty good, but does it mesh?"

    4. What are your expectations for the team in 2015?

"Bluntly, to win the AFC West and at least win a playoff game. I’m always pessimistic, but this roster is loaded and entering it’s third season under Andy Reid. This is the best roster the Chiefs have had in 20 years. Barring injury, this team should compete for a BYE week."

    5. Right here, right now, are you marking down the game against the Lions as a win, loss or toss-up?

"I believe the Chiefs win. It’s just a bad matchup for Detroit. Kansas City has a great pass rush and can cover receivers. Offensively, the Chiefs have enough to eek out a tight game."
