Detroit Tigers Trade Rumors: Tigers and Mets Have Talked Yoenis Cespedes
By Zac Snyder
Dave Dombrowski’s phone surely started blowing up as soon as he declared that the Detroit Tigers would make their free-agents-to-be available in trades. Call it selling or retooling – the impact is the same.
Now open for business, it could be argued the Tigers have the best starting pitcher (David Price) and bat (Yoenis Cespedes) that will come available at the MLB trade deadline this year.
Price could be the center of a bidding war, but the early team to watch for Cespedes is the New York Mets. They are in contention because of a strong pitching staff but need more offense to really make their mark in the National League. According to Newsday’s Marc Craig, the Mets are working on something big.

Perhaps the only bat bigger than Cespedes that is known to be available is Carlos Gonzalez of the Colorado Rockies. However, most observers currently feel that the Rockies are more likely to trade CarGo in the offseason than at the deadline. And, as Chris Cotillo reports, it isn’t CarGo that the Mets are after.
So, is it Cespedes? Well, maybe. Jon Morosi of Fox Sports reports that the Tigers and Mets have indeed discussed Cespedes, but states that progress has been “minimal.”
At this point Mets fans should either hope it is Cespedes the team is after or be very worried about being underwhelmed at who Craig considers a big bat. At best, it’s Justin Upton. Carlos Gomez? Then who? Brandon Moss?
For Tigers fans, the Mets have been and remain a team to watch as a potential trading partner for Yoenis Cespedes.
