Detroit Tigers: Yoenis Cespedes and Rajai Davis Likey to be Traded Today

David Price and Joakim Soria were trade by the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday, netting the club a trio of left-handed pitching prospects and a shortstop prospect respectively.

The Tigers still have as many of four players who could be traded today ahead of the 4:00 p.m. (non-waiver) trade deadline in Yoenis Cespedes, Rajai Davis, Alex Avila, and Alfredo Simon. Cespedes and Davis have both been productive this year and would bring value to a contending team. They’ll almost certainly be moved today.

Avila and Simon would carry significantly less value. Either or both could be moved in minor trades today, but either one could also be moved in August in a waiver trade as well so the deadline means less for them.

Cespedes should prove to be one of the biggest names on the block today. The New York Mets had been rumored to be interested in him previously, but they’re now focused on Jay Bruce of the Cincinnati Reds.

There was some chatter regarding the Chicago White Sox’s interest, but we’ll have to wait and see if there’s a match to be found there.

There have been fewer hard rumors on Rajai Davis, who will garner interest as a platoon outfielder or pinch runner. There was some initial reported interest from the San Francisco Giants, but it’s been relatively quiet otherwise — aside from Davis having a bit of fun on Twitter.

The Tigers will demand a smaller package for Davis than Cespedes, so they should be able to find a taker by the end of the afternoon.

Once all of the trades are complete, the Tigers should be happy with their trade deadline haul. They’ve already made some big improvements to their system depth with the moves yesterday. Today should bring more of that as well.
