If all goes according to plan, no one other than Matthew Stafford will have to take any meaningful snaps at quarterback. But should something happen, the Lions need someone behind Stafford they can turn to.

Both Dan Orlovsky and Kellen Moore are back with the Lions and appear assured of a roster spot, but their order on the depth chart is yet to be determined. Contract status suggests the Lions thought Moore would be ready to take over as the number two after spending all of last season on a gameday inactive while Orlovsky dressed. Moore got a two-year deal with a nice guarantee while Orlovsky returned on a one-year veteran minimum deal.

Expectations go out the window once the player step on the field and it’s all about results. So far in camp, both Orlovsky and Moore have been inconsistent. Practicing well would be nice but ultimately it’s about performing in a game setting.

At some point someone will have to inspire confidence or the Lions could be in trouble. Both Orlovsky and Moore have a big opportunity to use the preseason opener to put a good first impression on game film.
