With Joique Bell working his way back from injury, the shortened running back depth chart should leave plenty of action available for George Winn and Zach Zenner as the two compete for the Lions’ fourth running back spot. Zenner has quickly become a fan favorite after signing with the Lions as an undrafted free agent out of South Dakota State. However, it might not be how well he, or Winn, runs the ball that will determine his roster fate.

Focusing how these guys do on offense is missing at least half the picture. For guys deeper on the depth chart, special teams is the place they need to earn their keep. Winn shown his ability to be a good special teams contributor a year ago and Zenner will have to prove himself equally adept if he is to claim Winn’s spot on the final 53-man roster.

While the Winn-Zenner battle is the one at the forefront with most Lions fans, the same dynamic exists for a number of positions. On every special teams play, keep an eye out for players who shine. Those are the guys who may be claiming the inside track to making the final roster.
