Don’t Get Cute

I can’t emphasize this any more. I can understand wanting to be the smartest guy in the room, but you can do that by drafting the best player on the board and winning your league. Don’t draft Melvin Gordon in the first round, or Todd Gurley, or Gronk, or Jimmy Graham. DO NOT draft Golden Tate over Calvin Johnson. OBJ is an amazing talent and has a good connection with Eli, but he isn’t worth taking in the top 5 no matter whatever urge you have.

If you’re goal is winning, I’m sorry to say, you won’t want to draft Matthew Stafford in the top 5 QB’s. It’s always great to have Lions on your fantasy team to root for and if you want to lock up one a little early, that’s a personal choice. I like Ameer Abdullah to have a good rookie season. Even when Joique Bell recovers from his offseason surgeries I see them splitting the Detroit backfield with Theo Reddick having a small workload.

I’m ok with waiting for the right QB. In standard leagues where pass td’s are worth six points I value quarterbacks a little more than usual as they can win games alone many weeks. In PPR leagues or maybe one where pass TD’s are worth 4 I feel ok waiting for my QB.

Just don’t wait until Teddy Bridgewater is your starting fantasy QB. After the clear top 2 Rodgers and Andrew Luck, you really have a large amount of choices from Peyton Manning and Drew Brees all the way to Cam Newton and Ryan Tannehill. You can likely wait until the 9th round for a starter quality QB. No matter what happens in your draft, once you start to see guys like Big Ben or Eli Manning or Philip Rivers being drafted and you don’t have a QB it’s time to strongly consider pulling that trigger.

Tom Brady will miss at least a quarter of the season next year, so please don’t draft him before you’ve at least already filled most of your lineup at RB, WR, and TE. In fact I won’t take him before locking up another starting QB first.
