Now that the 2015 NFL regular season is complete, the NFL Draft order for the 2016 first round is set in stone for teams that missed the playoffs.

The Detroit Lions‘ game against the Chicago Bears to close the 2015 NFL season may have felt meaningless for both teams, but it did have an impact on where each team will select in the 2016 NFL Draft.

With the win over the Bears yesterday, the Lions fell behind the Bears in the 2016 NFL Draft order and finish as one of five teams to finish with a 7-9 record. Because the Lions faced the toughest schedule of the five, they move to the back of the line in the draft order.

That means they will hold the 16th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Despite a challenging season, only four non-playoff teams are slotted behind the Lions in the first round.

The 2016 NFL Draft order for the first 20 picks (non-playoff teams) is as follows:

The rest of the first round will be determined by playoff results. The New England Patriots will not have a first round pick as punishment for their involvement in the deflated football controversy during last season’s AFC Championship Game.

Picking 16th will take the Lions out of contention for drafting Laremy Tunsil – the top left tackle prospect in this draft. However, they remain in good position to draft a quality player who fills a need.

Despite Tunsil almost assuredly being unavilable, the Lions aren’t necessarily out of luck when it comes to the opportunity to improve the offensive tackle position with their first round pick should they so choose.

The early read on this crop of tackle prospects is that there is little separation between the next wave of prospects ranked behind Tunsil. Guys like Notre Dame’s Ronnie Stanley, Ohio State’s Taylor Decker and Michigan State’s Jack Conklin are good bets to be drafted in the first round and at least one figures to be available when the Lions are on the clock.

Offensive tackle looks like a good mix of need and value for where the Lions will be picking but other positions will be up for consideration. An impact defensive lineman like DeForest Buckner (Oregon) or middle linebacker Reggie Ragland (Alabama) would be worth a look.
