There is never a guarantee a seventh round draft pick will make it out of training camp so it’s all about trying find a guy who might have a shot. Syracuse defensive end Ron Thompson fits that bill after a college career that saw him play both inside and out, although he was asked to play out of position when moving inside.

Thompson brings some pass rush skills and burst that Kris Kocurek can work with as his overall game is refined. Larry Webster may not have worked out but the Lions have a track record with getting value out of pass rushers they have little invested in like George Johnson and Darryl Tapp.
