The Detroit Pistons make a quick stop home to face the Portland Trail Blazers before heading back on the road for their next four games.

In my gameday post on Wednesday before the Detroit Pistons road game against the San Antonio Spurs I asked whether or not that would make the beginning of the next downturn in this roller coaster season or a continuation of an upswing. At the time the Pistons were winners of four in a row, including wins over the top two teams in the Eastern Conference – the Cleveland Cavaliers and Toronto Raptors.

After hanging with the Spurs for a half, the Pistons faded badly in the second half as the Spurs coasted to the win. A road loss at San Antonio hardly defines the start of a downturn considering the Spurs have yet to lose at home this season as one of the longest home winning streaks in NBA history continues.

But that loss now looks like much more than an expected blip on the radar with last night’s loss to the New York Knicks. That loss combined by a win by the Chicago Bulls last night has the Pistons half a game out of the final playoff spot in the East.

With the next four on the road after tonight, a win over the Portland Trail Blazers at the Palace would help keep the situation from becoming desperate.

The Pistons have the benefit of a nine-game homestand when they return from their road trip but it would be much better if the team was looking to solidify their playoff standing instead of fighting for a spot in the field.

There is a big important context this evening’s game fits into but it isn’t a must win or a make or break situation. That being said, the Pistons can’t afford to throw away many opportunities like games against poor teams like the Knicks. In losing last night, the Pistons narrow their margin for error, placing more importance on games like today against the Trail Blazers.
