The Detroit Pistons struggled mightily in the first two meetings with the Charlotte Hornets and need a better result for their playoff push.

With the Chicago Bulls losing back to back games to the New York Knicks, the Detroit Pistons have a little breathing room as they occupy the final playoff position in the Eastern Conference standings.

Wednesday night’s Bulls loss to the Knicks, combined with the Pistons win over the Magic, broke a virtual tie in the standings to give the Pistons a one-game lead over the Bulls. Chicago fell another half game back with another loss to the Knicks on Thursday night. The Pistons’ game and a half lead over the ninth-place Bulls feels like more when you consider they have two more wins and one fewer loss than the Bulls.

The Bulls will have Friday night off after their back-to-back sweep at the hands of the Knicks. The Pistons’ matchup with the Charlotte Hornets at the Palace tonight is an opportunity to extend that lead instead of giving back a portion of the cushion.

The first two meetings of the season, both in Charlotte, were forgettable as far as the Pistons are concerned. It was a 104-84 loss in early December and a 118-103 loss earlier this month to give the Hornets an easy 2-0 lead in the season series.

But what happened between these teams before doesn’t matter now. All that matters now is that the Pistons are in the thick of a playoff race and the Hornets stand in the way of a much-needed win. To get that win, the Pistons will have to bring a lot more energy, particularly on the defensive end of the floor where the Hornets have been able to score with relative ease in the first two meetings.
