A franchise-high nine-game homestand comes to an end tonight as the Detroit Pistons host the Dallas Mavericks at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

The Detroit Pistons and Dallas Mavericks aren’t competing head-to-head in anything more than tonight’s game, but the Palace will have the excitement of a playoff chase all the same.

The Indiana Pacers’ loss to the Orlando Magic last night moved the Pistons a full game ahead of the Pacers for the seventh seed in the East while the Chicago Bulls made up a half game on the Pistons by beating the Houston Rockets last night. The Pistons remain two full games clear of the Bulls to stay on the inside of the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

The Mavericks are in a similar position to the Pistons but with a lot less wiggle room. Currently tied with the Utah Jazz for the last two playoff berths in the Western Conference, they sit just a half game ahead of the ninth-place Rockets.

Both the Pistons and Mavericks need every win they can get down the stretch but in the case of “who needs it more”, it’s clearly the Mavericks. The Pistons haven’t always fared well when facing opposition who bring a great sense of urgency to a game. With just seven regular season games to play, the next three of which will be on the road, the Pistons should be highly motivated to end their nine-game homestand with a win.
